Walk amongst the giant redwoods and old growth forests on the majestic Redwoods National Park photo workshop. Step in to a world where sunlight fractures into a thousand golden shafts and fog drifts like a living thing through trees older than empire. In May 2027, join me for an immersive photography workshop deep in Redwood National Park, where the ancient coast redwoods – some over 300 feet tall and 2,000 years old – create a landscape unlike anywhere else on earth.   It is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience to be amongst these trees, some of which are hundreds or thousands of years old.

May is the sweet spot here: spring fog rolls in most mornings, diffusing light into that soft, painterly glow every redwood photographer chases, while wildflowers like trillium, redwood sorrel and rhododendron add unexpected color to the forest floor.

Over several days, we will work to master:

  • Composing scale and grandeur – framing trees so vast they defy a single glance
  • Working with fog and filtered light for that signature ethereal redwood look
  • Long exposure and macro techniques for ocean, ferns, and forest detail
  • Golden hour and blue hour strategy at iconic groves and coastal overlooks

The Redwoods

The Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) are a complex of one United States national park and three California state parks located along the coast of northern California. The combined RNSP contain Redwood National Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The parks’ 139,000 acres (560 km2) preserve 45 percent of all remaining old-growth coast redwood forests. Located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, the four parks protect the endangeredcoast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)—the tallest, among the oldest, and one of the most massive tree species on Earth—which thrives in the humid temperate rainforest. The park region is highly seismically active and prone to tsunamis. The parks preserve 37 miles (60 km) of pristine coastline, indigenous flora, fauna, grassland prairie, cultural resources, waterways, as well as threatened animal species, such as the Chinook salmon, northern spotted owl, and Steller’s sea lion.

We’ll shoot in legendary locations including Stout Grove, Ladybird Johnson Grove and the Tall Trees Grove.  Plus, we will visit several iconic locations along the shoreline near Crescent City.

Whether you’re a seasoned shooter refining your craft or an enthusiast ready to level up, this workshop offers a rare chance to slow down, breathe old-growth air, and come home with images that carry the quiet enormity of the majestic redwoods.

Space is limited – reserve your spot for May and let the redwoods, and me, teach you how to see light differently.
