Join me and my European partner on an amazing photo expedition Sailing the ScoresbySund Fjords in Greenland in August of 2026.  East Greenland is one of the most isolated areas in Greenland and offers fantastic possibilities for photography as well as an incredible experience!  Silently sailing the fjords on a sailboat brings you closer and more connected to the environment and the landscape you are photographing.  This is the workshop for the serious landscape and wildlife photo enthusiast who’s wiling to go back in time and explore the Arctic and travel off the beaten track to get amazing imagery. Or, it’s for someone who wants a once-in-a-lifetime experience sailing on a boat silently through towering mountains and giant icebergs.  We will fly to Eastern Greenland from Reykjavik Iceland and board a schooner to sail amongst the icebergs in the largest fjord system in the world for 8 days and 7 nights.

Dates and prices are still being finalized at this time, however, if you are interested in going on this amazing voyage, please use the button below to email me and be added to the mailing list for this special experience.

Scoresbysund fjord is remote and the largest such system on the planet with deep channels and steep mountains bordering the waterway.  This remote area has some of the most dramatic scenery in Greenland and the only way to explore it is on a boat. And, what better boat to have than a sailing schooner designed for arctic exploration.  Quiet and efficient, it will transport us among the leviathan icebergs and allow us access to the shoreline all in search of epic photographs and amazing experiences.

What To Expect

On this workshop, you’ll have the options of photographing icebergs the size of skyscrapers, steep mountains which fall in to the sea, deep fjords, floating icebergs, glaciers, wildlife such as muskoxen, arctic fox, arctic hare and if we are lucky polar bears.  Plus, there is a chance of capturing the Northern Lights.  We have chartered a steel hulled ketch for the trip and we will sail the calm fjords for 8 days/7 nights.  The boat will be our base camp during the workshop where we will enjoy our meals, sleep and travel to different regions of the fjords.  The boat sails slowly and is especially quiet, which enhances the experience of the silent fjords.  It has comfortable double cabins (shared showers) and has a crew of 4 which will assist us in making the adventure E-book Chasing Big Ice story of sailing in Greenlandas pleasurable as possible.

Each day will find us in a different part of the fjord system and we will go ashore to photograph and stretch our legs.  Also, if the sky is clear, we will go on land after dark to photograph the dancing Northern Lights.  The steep mountains in the area and deep fjords makes these waters very sheltered and still.  The complete quietness is something we never experience in our busy modern world.  Here, we are completely immersed in the natural world around us!

Even though we will visit in August, we are visiting the High Arctic region and temperatures can get cold.  After all, there are icebergs and glaciers all around.  Preparing yourself with foul weather and winter clothing will make your adventure much more enjoyable. We will give you advice on clothing and photographic gear as we get closer to Sailing the ScoresbySund Fjords in Greenland.

I completed a book chronicling my last voyage in Greenland and this book is available on my site.  We will not be on the exact same vessel, nor follow the exact same route, but it can give you an amazing idea of what life was like during this trip.

Itinerary

The exact locations and itinerary won’t be finalized until 2026 when the final plans for the voyage are completed, Sailing the ScoresbySund Fjords in Greenland will be a “bucket-list” experience no matter what! We can plan on certain aspects of the trip and know which areas we will be in.  Of course, much depends on the weather and icepack in the area because that dictates where we can safely sail amongst the icebergs and various islands.  Here is a general idea of the itinerary that we follow for this amazing adventure.

Day 1 Arrive in Iceland

You will arrive in Iceland and make your way to the hotel in downtown Reykjavik.  We will have a hosted group dinner for all of the attendees the night before our departure to Greenland.

If you want to arrive early, or stay later, please let us know so that we could arrange additional hotel nights for you, or feel free to make additional arrangements on your own.

Day 2 Flight to Constable Point Greenland

We will depart Iceland for a chartered flight to Constable Point in Greenland, a small airfield on the west side of Hurry Inlet in Jameson Land.Iceberg and sailing ship in fjord of Greenland  We will board the boat and get an introduction and safety briefing by the crew.  Begin our sail towards the village of Ittoqqortoormilt where the evening is spent with locals in perhaps the most isolated village in the world.

Ittoqqortoormit was founded in the 1920’s by people from Ammassalik island. It is the most northerly settlement on the east coast of Greenland. The 450 inhabitants make their living mostly by subsistence hunting of seals, Narwhal, muskoxen and polar bear. The quaint little houses dot the rocky slopes of south Liverpool Land with magnificent views of Cap Brewster and the Volquart Boons Coast to the south.

We will leave the village and begin sailing overnight across the wide fjord to begin our exploration of the smaller fjords along the arms of ScoresbySund.

Day 3-7 Sailing Scoresbysound

Once we board the boat, we will venture out through Hall Bredning basin Massive iceberg and sailboat in Greenlandto begin our journey.  We will see some of the largest icebergs on the trip in Hall Bredning as this is the main “highway” for icebergs to head to sea and the northern fjords which create these behemoths feed directly in to Hall Bredning. The exact route and locations will be finalized close to the voyage based on weather, ice conditions and maximizing photographic opportunities during our time on the boat.  We will fully explore the Scoresbysound fjord system to its fullest, extracting as many wonderful experiences and photographs as possible!   Here are a few of the highlight areas that I know we’ll visit.

Ittoqqortoormiit Village

Greenland villageOur first stop on the journey is usually the village of Ittoq with its brightly painted buildings and lots of sled dogs running around.  With a population of only 345 people, it does not have any roads or connection to the outside world, other than by boat or helicopter. We will walk the village taking the sights, perhaps visit the general store to pick up some local snacks and just spend time appreciating what these folks go through to live in one of the most remote places on earth.

Bear Islands (Bjorne Islands)

The Bjorne Islands are a cluster of small islands that lie in the Hall Gulf (Hall Bredning), off the right side of the mouth of Ofjord, south of Mountains and icebergs in Greenlandthe mouth of Nordvestfjord. We will spend time anchored near these islands during our trip.  These islands offer protected shelter to anchor in, plus, amazing photographic possibilities.  We we venture on land to take a walk to a lake and explore the surrounding areas. One of the main features of this island chain is the “dinosaur back” Ridgeline which we will photograph at sunrise (or sunset depending on conditions)

Ofjord

Orange rocks and iceberg in GreenlandOfjord is perhaps the highlight of this trip, at least it was for me.  Granite mountains thousands of feet tall rising directly out of the fjord stretch for miles and miles.  It’s a narrow fjord, averaging between 2.5 and 3 miles across which makes it feel narrow and provides a very intimate experience as we silently sail along.  At close to 60 miles long, this fjord epitomizes the ruggedness and raw beauty of the Greenland landscape.  We may travel from the Bear Islands at the Eastern end towards the west, taking our time to make the transit.  Ofjord eventually ends when it connects to Rodefjord. We will spend some time in two smaller fjords, Hereford and Rypefjord, enjoying excursions on land, BBQs and easy hikes to photographic locations.

Greenland to Iceland

A sailing boat against the face of a glacier in GreenlandThe last morning we will enjoy a good breakfast together onboard the boat, write in the diary on board the schooner and share contact information with each other.  We will disembark the ketch for the last time and board the aircraft in Constable Point to fly back to Iceland where the workshop will conclude late in the afternoon at the airport.

Videos

Here are a couple of videos I made during the last voyage to give you some perspective of what it’s like photographing the massive icebergs and what life aboard the boat is like.  Again, remember that we will be on a different sailing boat, but the experience will be very similar.

Photographing Icebergs

We may or may not be able to visit Iceberg City due to regulations protecting the Narwhal whales.  This is being discussed amongst governments.  We will know closer to our trip.  However, this gives you an idea of the experiences that we can have around the icebergs

Life aboard the boat

Types of Photography

  • Still images – You will have the opportunity to shoot as much or as little as you want during the voyage.  As we sail along the fjords, passing towering cliffs, icebergs and all sorts of nature, we can shoot from the deck of the slowly moving boat.  Because the water is typically relatively smooth, it’s easy to shoot handheld from the deck of the boat. We will also do lots of land-based photography, both handheld and on a tripod. Grand landscapes, intimate shots/macro, wildlife (Musk Ox, Polar Bears, birds, etc) and if conditions are favorable, we may photograph the aurora overhead.
  • Video – Of course, the power of moving pictures in this epic landscape can’t be overlooked.
  • DRONE! This is the place for drone flyers!  With no height or distance restrictions, you can get some epic photographs of the icebergs, landscape and the boat from the air.  This is the most unbelievable drone flying I’ve ever done here!  If you are a beginning flyer, we will be there to help you launch and recover from the deck of the boat.  If you are an advanced flyer, you will be amazed at the types of imagery you can capture in this setting.  As a photographer and visual storyteller, flying a drone is a “must” for me to do here.

Fitness Level: Easy/Moderate

Will take short hikes on land over uneven terrain, up and down gradual hills to get to an overlook of the fjords. On one day we will go for a longer hike, out for most of the day, to search for wildlife and landscape photos.  This is optional as there are plenty of other things to do near the shore or on the boat.

The Boat

We will live aboard a sailing schooner during the workshop that is built and well equipped for the arctic environment. Our boat is a steel-hulled ketch that has been sailing the arctic waters for over 20 years, proving she is a capable expedition vessel.  She’s even made several trips to Antarctica and back!  She is 72′ long with a breadth of 20′.

The boat can handle up to 10 passengers for an arctic voyage and all rooms are double occupancy.  Living aboard a sailing vessel means that space is limited, yet you’ll find that you will find plenty of room for yourself onboard this boat as we silently sail the fjords amongst the great icebergs in the area. There are 4 berths in the forward part of the boat, 2 amidships and one towards the stern.  Sinks and a shower are also onboard to keep us clean in between our adventures on deck and on land.

There is a chef on board who prepares 3 meals a day and you will always find water, coffee and snacks available at all hours.  Dining is in the main salon area of the boat and typically served family style.  Every meal is made from scratch using local ingredients to provide the richest taste and most authentic experience possible while sailing the silent fjords.

Each room is a double occupancy and guest will be paired up with whom seems to be the best fit.  If you have any preferences, please let us know.  Or better yet, bring your spouse or friend along to share in the adventure!

We estimate that the workshop price will be $10k-$12k per person for the inclusive voyage.   See below for what is included and what is not included in the workshop price.  This is truly an adventure of a lifetime and we’ve worked hard to keep the price as low as possible.
