Walk amongst the giant redwoods and old growth forests on my Redwoods National Park photo workshop. It is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience to be amongst these trees, some of which are hundreds or thousands of years old. Towering hundreds of feet overhead, we will work on photographing these majestic giants and their surroundings in ways that portray their magnificence and grandeur. We will visit the major groves of trees in the park complex and spend time learning ways to capture the beauty and immensity of the old growth forests. Along with the tall trees, there is plenty to do along the forest floor as well with ferns, flowers and fungi. Wide-angle to macro, this area provides rich opportunities for every photographic interest. Situated along the Pacific Ocean, we will also spend some time photographing the ocean and local lighthouses.
The Redwoods
The Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) are a complex of one United States national park and three California state parks located along the coast of northern California. The combined RNSP contain Redwood National Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The parks’ 139,000 acres (560 km2) preserve 45 percent of all remaining old-growth coast redwood forests. Located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, the four parks protect the endangeredcoast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)—the tallest, among the oldest, and one of the most massive tree species on Earth—which thrives in the humid temperate rainforest. The park region is highly seismically active and prone to tsunamis. The parks preserve 37 miles (60 km) of pristine coastline, indigenous flora, fauna, grassland prairie, cultural resources, waterways, as well as threatened animal species, such as the Chinook salmon, northern spotted owl, and Steller’s sea lion.
This makes it the perfect location to explore your creative vision and push the boundaries of how you see and capture the world around you.
Fitness Level: Easy/Moderate
We will be walking on slightly uneven forest paths with some elevation gain/loss. The workshop is structured to allow for all fitness levels, you can go as far or as short as you want with plenty to photograph either way.
Logistics
You can fly in directly to Medford or Portland airports and drive the remaining distance to the workshop. We will be based in Crescent City CA, which puts us in a prime location for many of the locations we will visit. We will travel each day from the hotel to our locations and return at various times for rest and/or image reviews. More information will be sent to you after registration.
