SUMMARY:Olympic National Park Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join me for an Olympic National Park photo workshop\, located on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. The park sprawls across several different ecosystems\, from the dramatic peaks of the Olympic Mountains to old-growth forests down to the amazing beaches of the Pacific shoreline.  We’ll visit locations such as the Hoh Rainforest\, La Push\, The Sol Duc Valley\, Ruby Beach\, and many more during our workshop. Having visited and conducted many workshops in the park over the past 20 years\, I know some secret locations! The diversity of the ecosystems in such proximity makes this one of the most desirable areas on earth to photograph.  \n Join me as I lead you through one of the most beautiful areas in the US. I have many years of experience photographing this park and know the ins and outs of each location to ensure that you have a wonderful experience and the best chance of capturing amazing images\, being at the right place at the right time.    I don’t run this workshop every year…it is a special time when we get to photograph the park\, so please consider joining me in 2026.  \nRain and storms on the northern Washington coastline are common this time of year. Yes\, we shoot in the rain\, but if you want drama\, this is for you! This is a great time to be here since the chance of rain often makes for great sunsets and light. Typically\, the best photography here is made in the soft light of an overcast or rainy day as we move about the park. The advantage of making images in cloudy conditions is that when most objects are wet they glisten and the water bends the reflected light coming off an object’s surface. The water reflects the light in various directions which intensifies and enhances the already special effect of the deep green lush rainforests that we’ll be experiencing.  \nWe’ll meet in Forks\, Washington on the evening of April 8th at 5pm in the hotel lobby to get to know each other\, go over itineraries and discuss our objectives for the workshop.  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n*John Pedersen Photography is licensed and permitted to operate in Olympic National Park \n  \n\n  \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \nWe will walk on maintained trails as well as un-even terrain in the forest and to access the beach locations. Slight elevation gains. We are never far away from our cars if you need to take a break. \nLogistics \nYou can fly in directly to Seattle Washington and travel to the Park. We will be based in Forks Washington\, which puts us in a prime location for many of the locations we will visit.   We will travel each day from the hotel to our locations and return at various times for rest and/or image reviews.  More information will be sent to you after registration. \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Expert guiding\n• Travel to/from workshop location and during workshop\n\n\n• In-field photographic instruction\n• Lodging\n\n\n• Classroom instruction\n• Meals\n\n\n• Post workshop syllabus and support\n\n\n\n• New friends and a great time!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Grand Teton NP in Winter
DESCRIPTION:Nothing says Wyoming like the Grand Teton NP in Winter\, located just outside Jackson Hole. At this time of year\, the Christmas decorations are up but the crowds haven’t arrived yet and it’s a perfect time for a photo workshop – Winter in the Tetons!  Join myself and Jack Graham as we lead you on this amazing experience in a landscape that is truly “picture perfect”.   \nExperience Grand Teton National Park on this amazing winter photo workshop! We will spend 3 ½ days exploring Grand Teton National Park in winter. The snow-capped mountains of the Teton range will be visible from the famous Snake River locations we’ll photograph from.  Plus\, much like Yellowstone\, wildlife is common – we often see moose\, elk\, trumpeter swans\, bison and coyotes. And in the winter\, the wildlife is down from the high country and much more active as they forage for food. We will photograph the snow capped mountains of the Tetons range\, rustic cabins\, meandering creeks and rivers\, plus many other fantastic sights.    Join us for this stunning winter adventure!  \nWe will base our workshop out of Jackson Wyoming which is just a short distance from the park.  We will spend our days photographing the landscapes and winter scenes and hunting for the ideal wildlife images.  Plus\, we will spend time doing image reviews and learning throughout the workshop.  The days are short here this time of year and we will make the most of each day\, maximizing our photographic time with the available light and conditions.  \nPlease note that although the workshop starts at sunrise on December 5th\, we will meet in Jackson Hole\, WY on the evening of December 4th for an hour or so to go over itineraries\, travel\, and workshop goals.  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n*John Pedersen Photography is an Authorized Permittee of Grand Teton National Park * \n  \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \n2022 Workshop Highlights \n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \nNo strenuous hikes. SUMMARY:Bears of Katmai N.P.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime photo workshop photographing the bears of Katmai N.P.. You won’t want to miss this incredible experience photographing grizzly bears in their natural habitat along with other Northern wildlife\, all in the beauty of the Fall colors. \nWe have the best guides in the region and will go to areas few others ever travel to. This wilderness area is sparsely populated. The bears rule the land here and humans have adapted to respect the bears for what they are. As a result\, the bears have little fear of humans since they are the kings in this wilderness. We will be in the ultimate location for the amazing experience of photographing these marvelous animals as they dive into the rivers to catch salmon before their winter hibernation. This workshop is during the Fall season in Alaska which means that we’ll have beautiful foliage as a backdrop to the bears. \nWe will fly in to Katmai N.P. each day on float planes and use inflatable rafts to float small streams through bear country in the Alaska wilderness.  Gently floating past fishing grizzly bears\, stopping wherever there is a good photo opportunity\, each day is filled with amazing experiences.  A lunch is provided for us and each day we will stop along the river to eat\, shoot or just relax in this beautiful landscape. At the end of each day we will fly back to our lodge for amazing food and a warm bed after recounting the days adventure among us.  The bears can come very close to us on these trips\, giving you an up-close and personal experience\, but don’t worry\, they are more interested in salmon than us humans.  Our guides will navigate the boats and ensure our safety in this wild land. Weather and conditions permitting\, we may also fly to the world famous Brooks Camp to photograph the bears fishing on top the waterfall and in the surrounding areas.  We may even get a chance to fly up and visit Dick Pronnekes cabin along Twin Lakes.  An amazing experience to see how this man lived alone in the wilderness for many years! \nWe will stay in a wonderful lodge along Lake Iliamna and enjoy home cooked meals for breakfast and dinner. Lunches will be provided to us each day to eat in the field. The itinerary for each day will be specifically catered to us and our photographic priorities and we will be flown into the Alaskan wilderness by float plane (we have the best and most experienced pilots with us) and guided to the best locations.   Note:  the ability to fly and which locations are accessible are weather dependent and during the Fall there is more likelihood for weather delays. \nEach evening we’ll download our images and provide comprehensive discussions regarding composition\, animal behavior\, “seeing images” and the formulation of artful photography. In addition to getting you to the right locations\, we’ll make sure your photographic skills are developed as well.  While at our locations\, we’ll help you both technically\, developing proper field techniques and artistically\, to help bring out your best creative photography. \nUpon registration you’ll receive a complete PDF file containing everything you need to know concerning lodging\, transportation\, etc. for this once in a lifetime experience. \nActivity Level:  The activity level for this trip is Moderate.  This means that you will need to walk up to 2 miles a day over uneven terrain or through shallow creeks. \nTravel to Iliamna and any lodging before or after the workshop are the responsibility of the attendee.  All lodging\, meals and transportation during the workshop are included in the workshop cost.  Waders and wading boots are also provided. \nWe are limiting this trip to a small number of attendees. Accommodations are double occupancy only in private cabins. If the workshop appears sold out on the website\, please contact us to inquire about attending. Please contact us for more information about this amazing trip if you are interested\, or sign up today.  We have a limited number of spots for this trip as it is a custom experience tailored to give you the best photographic opportunities possible. \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \nPhoto Gallery\n  \n\n  \n\n  \n\n  \nMore Alaska Videos

SUMMARY:The Hidden Palouse
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden Palouse – Exploring areas beyond the beaten path and capturing the subtlety and nuance of this amazing area\nMyself and Jack Graham will once again be offering an amazing workshop in the beautiful Palouse region of Eastern Washington.  Jack and I have over 30 years experience leading groups across this landscape and we know the hidden gems of this amazing landscape.  For 2025\, we will be focusing our vision on the hidden gems of the area\, from landscapes\, small towns and Americana and abstracts. \nToo often people are focused on just a couple of famous locations in the Palouse\, Steptoe Butte being one of them.  NOTICE:  Steptoe Butte will be closed during this time for important repairs to the road and park\, however\, there is SO MUCH MORE to the Palouse than Steptoe Butte. We will spend time moving beyond the obvious and draw out the subtle nuances of the rolling landscape and the storytelling possible in the various small towns in the area.  The rolling hills of wheat\, barley\, lentils and canola with the addition of spring wildflowers and country roads punctuated with over 100-year-old year old barns lends itself to a photographer’s paradise. The subject matter is endless. The Palouse area is located in Southeastern Washington where the major towns are Pullman\, Washington and Moscow\, Idaho. We will base our Palouse photo workshop out of the small town of Colfax\, which is central to everything we want to photograph. The Palouse is fairly remote. It’s not a tourist destination but during the spring and summer there are usually many photographers. \nThe Palouse can challenge all photographers to create compelling compositions amidst the rolling hills and country settings.  Various shades of greens offset the blue skies with trees dotting the landscapes.  It offers such a wide range of photographic subjects and compositional possibilities! Everything from wide angle landscapes\, to intimate nature scenes\, abstracts and Americana.  We will guide you to the best locations in the area and provide as much in-field guidance as you want or need.  Our focus will be on the the hidden areas of the Palouse\, learning to “see” the area and working to create compelling compositions and capture them in our cameras. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Also\, please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \nEXTRA ADDED ATTRACTION (not officially part of our workshop!): We’ll be heading north of Colfax by about 45 minutes on the morning the day before the workshop begins (around 8 am)\, going up to Sprague\, Washington to photograph the old trucks in Dave’s Old Truck Rescue. You are welcome to tag along. I’ll be returning to Colfax around noon. Please let us know if you are joining us. If you are\, please arrive in Colfax the day before. There is no extra charge for this excursion. \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \nAll locations close to the cars and we will be on maintained level ground.  Facilities will typically be very close by. \nLogistics \nYou can fly in directly to Spokane or Seattle Washington. We will be staying and based in Colfax WA\, which puts us in a prime location for many of the locations we will visit.   We will travel each day from the hotel to our locations and return at various times for rest and/or image reviews.  More information will be sent to you after registration. \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Expert guiding\n• Travel to/from workshop location and during workshop\n\n\n• In-field photographic instruction\n• Lodging\n\n\n• Classroom instruction\n• Meals\n\n\n• Post workshop syllabus and support\n\n\n\n• New friends and a great time!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Bandon and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Come with me to explore Bandon and Beyond! \nThe Southern Oregon Coast is an amazing landscape to photograph and Bandon is one of the Crown Jewels!  In this photo workshop\, we will explore the area in and around Bandon plus so much more!  Experience everything from the magnificent cliffs\, which drop hundreds of feet into the blue Pacific Ocean to the small fishing villages with quaint buildings with the nautical feeling\, sandy beaches\, rocky outcroppings and majestic sea scapes around every corner. Plus there are many working lighthouses offer unique photographical experiences and small fishing towns offer beautiful harbors with easy access to fishing boats.   We will base the workshop out of Bandon\, just a few steps away from the famous Bandon Beach.  We will venture south towards Cape Blanco\, Port Orford and beyond to capture this incredible landscape. \nWe will be at the right place\, at the right time to capture some amazing images\, found only on the Oregon coast while honing our photographic skills. Specific locations have been determined by years of experience. We’ll visit some of the well-known\, iconic places\, as well as many places off the beaten path. The Oregon Coast workshops are perhaps my most anticipated. The Oregon Coast contains some of the most varied\, unique areas and because of its remote beaches and tide pools\, rocky coastline with majestic sea stacks and dramatic sunsets\, this area offers great and different photographic experiences at every turn. \nWe will be working the area in and around Bandon\, Oregon. This workshop will be an intense 3 1/2 days of total immersion into photographing the beaches and harbors in this beautiful area. We will study and evaluate our work\, then return to improve our image making. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n  \n\n  \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \nMost locations are a short walk over gentle terrain.  No big elevation changes.  We will typically be close to our cars if you need to take a break. \nLogistics \nYou can fly in to Portland or Eugene Oregon and drive to our workshop start location. SUMMARY:Ultimate Desert SW Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ultimate Desert SW Workshop\nPlease consider joining us on our Ultimate Desert SW Workshop where we will photograph the Monument Valley area\, from high atop Hunts Mesa and spend two full days in Canyon de Chelley.  This will be the 20th year Jack Graham and I have offered this workshop and we have a vast amount of experience\, plus our handpicked Navajo guides to get you to the best locations at the best times of the day for the opportunity to create amazing images that you will cherish for a lifetime. \nThis year is extra special as we are adding additional days to the length of the workshop so that we can slow down and immerse ourselves in this beautiful landscape and take time to learn the nuances of the desert to capture compelling and dramatic images.  We will spend 4 days in the Monument Valley area\, including one night on Hunts Mesa\, before we move to Chinle and spend two full days in Canyon de Chelley. \nMonument Valley\nOur workshop starts in Monument Valley Utah.  Our base will be at a local hotel which provides all the convinces we need to stay comfortable for the long days ahead.  We will visit several locations in Monument Valley\, including areas only accessible if you have a Navajo guide to escort you.  We will visit the Totem Pole area\, Suns Eye\, Ear of the Wind as well as spend time with a Navajo family deep in the valley to photograph their hogan and surroundings.  We will also visit Mystery Valley for some amazing photo opportunities that few ever get a chance to see.   Besides the most well known icons of the valley\, like the Mittens\, we will also visit several other locations throughout the valley\, photographing at different times of day to capture the essence and spirit of this magical desert landscape. We might even get a chance to head out to the Forest Gump road for the iconic shot! \n  \n\nHunts Mesa\nWhile in the Monument Valley area\, we have a special treat planned for our workshop.  We will meet our Navajo Guides and travel from the hotel to the top of Hunts Mesa via an exhilarating 4wd adventure.  We will camp out on top of the Mesa\, with everything provided for you!  Tents will be set up with cots and blankets for sleeping and that evening we will enjoy a wonderful camp dinner prepared for us.  We will photograph the sunset from on top the Mesa and after dinner and the sun goes down\, the night sky will erupt with thousands of stars visible making for some outstanding night photography.  After a nights rest\, we will arise before the sun and get in position to capture sunrise from the top of the Mesa looking down to the desert floor and landscape features.  A truly memorable experience!  After a prepared breakfast\, we will make the drive back to our hotel to regroup and continue photographing the Monument Valley area. \n  \nCanyon de Chelley\nAfter Monument Valley\, we will travel on our own to Chinle AZ to check in to our next hotel near the canyon.  After getting settled\, we will spend the remainder of the day photographing at various locations around the area.  The next morning\, we will meet our guides for an all-day trip in to Canyon de Chelley.  We will travel through sacred lands to rarely photographed locations deep inside the canyon.  We have specific locations we recommend to photograph such as White House Ruins\, but are also always open to the conditions and environment and may visit other more memorable locations within the canyon.  Having an exclusive guide who lives here affords us unique access to the canyon as well as an intimate knowledge of the landscape and providing the best vantage points for our photographic goals.  The first day in the canyon you will be amazed at the towering rock walls and the vast amount of ruins and petroglyphs and at times it can simply be overwhelming. So\, after a night decompressing at our hotel\, we will spend a second day deep in the canyon really working to come away with artistic interpretations of our impressions and experiences.  One day is simply not enough\, that is why we’ve added a second day on this Ultimate Desert SW Workshop! \nA box lunch will be provided during our days in the canyon.  More details on the itinerary and menu options will be provided after registration. \nAfter the last day in the canyon\, we will return to the hotel and the workshop will end.  Because it will be late in the day\, we recommend to spend the night in Chinle before traveling home. \n  \n  \nIf you would like more information about this workshop before registering\, please contact John or Jack with your questions and/or the workshop information document to help you learn more about this fantastic experience. \n  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Also\, please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n  \nHere is a short video from our previous Desert SW workshop.  These are just a few examples of the amazing sights and locations you may have an opportunity to photograph. \n\n  \nThis workshop to Monument Valley\, Hunts Mesa\, Canyon de Chelley is an incredible opportunity to experience the best of the Desert SW with experienced leaders with no more than a 5:1 leader/attendee ratio.  More than just photography\, it is guaranteed to be an immersive and varied experience that you will remember for a lifetime. \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy/Moderate \n\nMost photo locations are near the vehicle and do not require much walking\nWe will have a short walk over un-even terrain to get to Totem Pole\nThe ground on Hunts Mesa is un-even rock/sand\, so if you are unstable\, please bear this in mind\nHunts Mesa is over 6300’ high. Those coming from sea level may notice the altitude\nAt each location\, you can stay near the vehicles or walk amongst the landscape. Be aware that these are wild lands with uneven terrain.\n\n  \nLogistics \nThe closest airports to our workshop start in Monument Valley are Phoenix or Albequerque both roughly 5 hours drive away.  You may be able to fly in closer to a smaller airport.  You will need a rental car to travel to the workshop start and during the workshop (though we try and carpool as much as possible). When we visit Hunts Mesa and Canyon de Chelley\, transportation will be provided by our Navajo guides.  Our workshop will end in Chinle Arizona on the afternoon of April 16th. We recommend staying the night on the 16th before driving to the airport on the 17th. \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Guide and Permit fees\n• Travel to/from/during workshop*\n\n\n• Transportation during guided portions\n• Lodging*\n\n\n• Meals on Hunts Mesa/Canyon de Chelley\n• Meals*\n\n\n• Camping gear on Hunts Mesa\n• Tips/Gifts\n\n\n• Expert Photographic Instruction from two expert photographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*some exceptions apply during Hunts Mesa/Canyon de Chelley

SUMMARY:Eastern Sierras Fall Color Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining me on the Eastern Sierras Fall Color Photo Workshop to experience the majesty of the fall color and the astonishing landscape of the area. Having led workshops in this area for many years\, I know where to go and when to be there!  We’ll visit some of the well-known\, iconic places\, as well as many places off the beaten path. \nIf I had one place to photograph it would be here. We’ll see Mono Lake\, the White Mountains\, and the town of Bodie\, once a booming mining town that went bust. Today it’s a genuine ghost town that’s in very good shape and offers endless photographic possibilities.  We’ll see the oldest living species on the planet—the Ancient Bristlecone Pines\, beautiful mountain streams and aspen groves\, sure to be in full grandeur when we arrive. This time of the year is the prime time for fall color. \nWe will start our Eastern Sierras fall color photo workshop in Bishop CA and gradually work our way North to Lee Vining.  Along the way we’ll photograph mountain vistas\, birch and aspen trees\, flowing streams\, placid lakes and above all else\, lots of amazing Fall color! Once in Lee Vining we will photograph the famous Mono Lake at different times of day to capture the mood and essence of this other-worldly location.  Plus\, we will visit the historic Bodie Ghost Town and several other prime Fall Color locations.  Our Eastern Sierra Fall Color Photo Workshop is built upon over 26 years of leading workshops in this area so we know where to go and when to get there for the best photo opportunities.  I will be providing in-field instruction as well as classroom instruction in the art of composition\, storytelling\, plus some image reviews to provide in-the-moment feedback. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Also\, please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \nHere is a short video slideshow of images from this area.  So much variety and photographic possibility! \n\n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \nNo strenuous hikes. SUMMARY:Fjords of Silence - Greenland
DESCRIPTION:Join me and my European partner on an amazing photo expedition in our Fjords of Silence – Greenland to East Greenland aboard a schooner sailing vessel.  East Greenland is one of the most isolated areas in Greenland and offers fantastic possibilities for photography.  This is the workshop for the serious landscape and wildlife photo enthusiast who’s wiling to go back in time and explore the Arctic and travel off the beaten track to get amazing imagery.  We will fly to Eastern Greenland from Reykjavik Iceland and board a schooner to sail amongst the icebergs in the largest fjord system in the world. There are limited spots available and the workshop is almost filled\, so if you are interested\, please reach out to me as soon as possible. \n  \nEmail Me\n  \nScoersbysund fjord is remote and the largest such system on the planet with deep channels and steep mountains bordering the waterway.  This remote area has some of the most dramatic scenery in Greenland and the only way to explore it is on a boat. And\, what better boat to have than a sailing schooner designed for arctic exploration.  Quiet and efficient\, it will transport us among the leviathan icebergs and allow us access to the shoreline all in search of epic photographs and amazing experiences. \nWhat To Expect\nOn this workshop\, you’ll have the options of photographing icebergs the size of skyscrapers\, steep mountains which fall in to the sea\, deep fjords\, floating icebergs\, glaciers\, wildlife such as muskoxen\, arctic fox\, arctic hare and if we are lucky polar bears.  Plus\, there is a chance of capturing the Northern Lights.  We have chartered a wooden schooner for the trip and we will sail the calm fjords for 8 days/7 nights.  The boat will be our base camp during the workshop where we will enjoy our meals\, sleep and travel to different regions of the fjords.  The boat sails slowly and is especially quiet\, which enhances the experience of the silent fjords.  It has comfortable double cabins (shared showers) and has a crew of 4 which will assist us in making the adventure as pleasurable as possible. \nEach day will find us in a different part of the fjord system and we will go ashore to photograph and stretch our legs.  Also\, if the sky is clear\, we will go on land after dark to photograph the dancing Northern Lights.  The steep mountains in the area and deep fjords makes these waters very sheltered and still.  The complete quietness is something we never experience in our busy modern world.  Here\, we are completely immersed in the natural world around us! \n \n  \nItinerary\nBelow is the proposed itinerary.  Of course like all things\, we need to remain adaptable and flexible depending on weather and water conditions \nDay 1 Arrive in Iceland \nArrival in Iceland and transportation to our hotel in Reykjavik.  Attend group dinner at a local restaurant in Reykjavik and plan for the upcoming adventure. \nIf you want to arrive early\, or stay later\, please let us know so that we could arrange additional hotel nights for you \nDay 2 Flight to Constable Point Greenland \nDepart Iceland for a flight to Constable Point in Greenland\, a small airfield on the west side of Hurry Inlet in Jameson Land.  Embark the schooner and get an introduction and safety briefing by the crew.  Begin our sail towards the village of Ittoqqortoormilt where the evening is spent with locals in perhaps the most isolated village in the world \nIttoqqortoormit was founded in the 1920’s by people from Ammassalik island. It is the most northerly settlement on the east coast of Greenland. The 450 inhabitants make their living mostly by subsistence hunting of seals\, Narwhal\, muskoxen and polar bear. The quaint little houses dot the rocky slopes of south Liverpool Land with magnificent views of Cap Brewster and the Volquart Boons Coast to the south. \nDay 3 Sailing Scoresbysound \nWe sail out early morning and head across the Scoresbysound fjord system to the towering basalt peaks on the south coast of the fjord.  We sail between whole palaces of icebergs that gently drift under the influence of the currents in the arctic waters after calving from the parent glaciers originating in the inland ice.  We will likely anchor in the late evening at Hakla Haven\, on Denmark O\, the site of an old Inuit settlement and wintering camp of the first scientific expedition to Scoresbysound over a hundred years ago. \nDay 4 Fohnfjord and Iceberg City \nWe sail west through the narrow Fohnfjord with the majestic basalt mountains of Grassland on the port side and 2000 meter high sheer granite cliffs of Milne Land on the starboard side.  At the end of the fjord we will anchor at Red Island and even make landfall here. In the afternoon and evening we will take a zodiac to the magnificent iceberg city where hundreds of huge icebergs are stranded on the ground underwater. \nDay 5 Rodefjord and Harefjord \nOur journey continues to the north through Rodefjord which is often filled with both larger icebergs and ice crust from ‘bergs that are breaking up.  This is the calmest and most vegetated part of the fjord which may be starting the Fall color transition. Sailing the calm fjord we will see muskoxen roaming the hillsides. Somewhere along the fjord we will take a short hike to photograph the vivid colored vegetation and try our luck with the wildlife. We will arrive in Hereford in the late afternoon where anchors are set. Here we will have a very good chance of photographing the northern lights if the sky is clear. \nDay 6 Harefjord \nDepending on weather and ice conditions we will stay another night in the Hereford scouting for muskoxen\, snow hares\, grouse\, geese and other wildlife which normally graze on the south facing slopes. We may take a longer hike on land this day and enjoy a lunch ashore as we take in the breathtaking views over Herefjord where the glacier tongue descends in to the sea. For those who prefer less exercise\, you can stroll along the shoreline or stay on board enjoying the view. In the evening the crew will make a bonfire and prepare a BBQ dinner on the beach. \nDay 7 Ofjord and Bear Island \nThe sailing continues eastwards through the awesome Ofjord. This is one of the most spectacular parts of the trip! Terrific mountain peaks and granite walls tower 2000 meters up from the sea\, as if the Patagonia mountains of Fitzroy and Cerro Torre had been moved to the Arctic. Usually the sea breeze in the Ofjord during the middle of the day allows sails to be set.  You are more than welcome to assist with the rigging!  This day ends by setting anchor at Bear Islands in the afternoon. \nDay 8 Bear Island to Constable Point \nSailing the channel between Bear Island and Milne Land with a breathtaking view of the spectacular archipelago. As we sail in to the last evening and night of the trip it is likely that we’ll be experiencing the sights of the largest and the most fascinating icebergs of the journey. This provides a fantastic opportunity for photographs of the majestic and impressive icebergs that are found in this area.  When we wake up the next morning we are anchored at the airstrip in Constable Point. \nDay 9 Greenland to Iceland \nThe last morning we will enjoy a good breakfast together\, write in the diary on board the schooner and share contact information with each other.  We will disembark the schooner for the last time and board the aircraft in Constable Point and fly back to the Keflavik airport in Iceland where the workshop will conclude. \n  \n  \n \nFitness Level: Easy/Moderate\nWill take short hikes on land over uneven terrain\, up and down gradual hills to get to an overlook of the fjords. On one day we will go for a longer hike\, out for most of the day\, to search for wildlife and landscape photos.  This is optional as there are plenty of other things to do near the shore or on the boat. \nThe Boat\nWe will live aboard a sailing schooner during the workshop that is built and well equipped for the arctic environment.  All meals\, sleeping and showers are handled aboard the boat. Below is the deck plan for the boat \n \nIf you want to see pictures\, HERE is a gallery of the inside of the vessel \n  \nCost\nThe cost of the workshop is €9650.  The USD equivalent will be determined by exchange rates at the time of payment.  Payments can be made via wire transfer or credit card.   See below for the short list of what is and what is not included in the workshop price. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Schooner Expedition\n• Travel to/from Iceland\n\n\n• Flights from Iceland to Greenland and back\n• Lodging before or after workshop\n\n\n• Meals on board schooner\n• Alcohol/snacks/souvenirs\n\n\n• Dinner the first night in Reykjavik Iceland\n• Tips\n\n\n• Two professional photo guides\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nCancellation Policy\nBecause this is an international workshop which requires us to commit resources well in advance\, the cancellation policy is a bit different than normal.   If you cancel your trip and the workshop is otherwise filled\, we will refund you the full amount you have paid towards the tuition\, minus a $150 service charge. If you cancel and the workshop does not fill\, then you will be refunded according to the following schedule\, based on the full fee of the workshop: \n\nGreater than 121 days from the start date of the workshop – full refund amount paid\, minus $150\n120-91 days: 75% refund\n90-61 days: 50% refund\nLess than 60 days: no refund\n\nRefunds will be paid by the same method that the original payment was made and will be initiated within 72 hours of the time that the request is approved. \nIf you are interested in receiving more information or have questions about this\, please reach out to me soon\, via the email button below. \nEmail Me

SUMMARY:Palouse Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining me for my Palouse photo workshop in Eastern Washington.  I have many years leading workshops in this area and know the best spots to get both the iconic and hidden gems in this area. \n  \nThe Palouse can challenge all photographers to create compelling compositions amidst the rolling hills and country settings.  Various shades of greens offset the blue skies with trees dotting the landscapes.  It offers such a wide range of photographic subjects and compositional possibilities! We will conduct image reviews along with educational sessions during the workshop to help elevate our creative vision and technical skills in capturing this magnificent location. \n\n\nAbout your instructors\n\n\nJohn Pedersen is a full-time professional photographer\, workshop leader and creative educator based in Portland and Yachats Oregon. SUMMARY:Olympic Natl Park Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Photograph the Pacific Northwest Olympic Natl Park Photo Workshop \nOlympic National Park is on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. The park sprawls across several different ecosystems\, from the dramatic peaks of the Olympic Mountains to old-growth forests down to the amazing beaches of the Pacific shoreline.  We’ll visit locations such as the Hoh Rainforest\, Hurricane Ridge\, The Sol Duc Valley\, Ruby Beach\, and many more during our workshop. Having visited and conducted many workshops in the park over the past 20 years\, we know some secret locations! The advantage of making images in the rain is that when most objects are wet they glisten and the water bends the reflected light coming off an object’s surface. The water reflects the light in various directions which intensifies and enhances the already special effect of the deep green lush rainforests that we’ll be experiencing.  \nWe’ll meet in Forks\, Washington on the evening of April 17th at 6pm in the hotel lobby to get to know each other\, go over itineraries and discuss our objectives for the workshop.

SUMMARY:Eastern Sierras Fall Color Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining us on our Eastern Sierras Fall Color Workshop to experience the majesty of the fall color and the astonishing landscape of the area. In conjunction with Jack Graham\, we are offering this workshop for the 26th year\, proud to be able to offer this fantastic photographic experience to you.  Having led workshops in this area for so many years\, we know where to go and when to be there! \nWe will start our Eastern Sierras fall color workshop in Bishop CA and gradually work our way North to Lee Vining. Our Eastern Sierra Fall Color Workshop is built upon over 26 years of leading workshops in this area so we know where to go and when to get there for the best photo opportunities.  You will have two instructors\, Jack Graham and John Pedersen\, who can give you as much\, or as little\, in-field and classroom instruction as you want. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. This event happens only every two years\, so now is the time to get a memorable image of these desert icons. \nWe will also visit several other locations throughout the valley\, photographing at different times of day to capture the essence and spirit of this magical desert landscape. \n  \nHunts Mesa\nWhile in the Monument Valley area\, we have a special treat planned for our workshop.  We will meet our Navajo Guides and travel from the hotel to the top of Hunts Mesa. After a prepared breakfast\, we will make the drive back to our hotel to regroup and continue photographing the area. \n  \nCanyon de Chelley\nAfter Monument Valley\, we will travel on our own to Chinle AZ to check in to our next hotel.  After getting settled\, we will spend the remainder of the day photographing at various locations around the area.  The next day\, we will meet our guides for an all-day trip in to Canyon de Chelley.  We will travel through sacred lands to rarely photographed locations deep inside the canyon.  We have specific locations we recommend to photograph\, but are also always open to the conditions and environment and may visit other more memorable locations within the canyon.  Having an exclusive guide who lives here affords us unique access to the canyon as well as intimate knowledge of the landscape and providing the best vantage points for our photographic goals. \nA box lunch will be provided to us during our day in the canyon.  More details on the itinerary and menu options will be provided after registration. \nAfter the day in the canyon\, we will return to the hotel and the workshop will end.  Because it will be late in the day\, we recommend to spend the night in Chinle before traveling home. \n  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. SUMMARY:Palouse in the Spring Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Palouse in the Spring Photo Workshop – Part of our Photograph the Pacific Northwest Workshop series with myself and Jack Graham. \nJoin Jack Graham and myself in the wheat fields of Eastern Washington for our Palouse Spring Workshop.  Jack and I have many years leading workshops in this area and we know the best spots to get both the iconic and hidden gems in this area. The rolling hills of wheat\, barley\, lentils and canola with the addition of spring wildflowers and country roads punctuated with over 100-year-old year old barns lends itself to a photographer’s paradise. The subject matter is endless. The “Palouse” area is located in Southeastern Washington where the major towns are Pullman\, Washington and Moscow\, Idaho. We will base our workshop out of the small town of Colfax\, which is central to everything we want to photograph. The Palouse is fairly remote. It’s not a tourist destination but during the spring and summer there are usually many photographers. \n  \nThe Palouse can challenge all photographers to create compelling compositions amidst the rolling hills and country settings.  Various shades of greens offset the blue skies with trees dotting the landscapes.  It offers such a wide range of photographic subjects and compositional possibilities! Everything from wide angle landscapes\, to intimate nature scenes\, abstracts and Americana.  We will guide you to the best locations in the area and provide as much in-field guidance as you want or need.  We will visit some popular locations as well as “hidden” locations that we know from our years of leading workshops in this area. \n  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. SUMMARY:Central Oregon Coast Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore an intimate Oregon coast experience on my Central Oregon Coast Workshop!  Join me for an intensive few days along the Oregon Coast to capture the moods and personality of this amazing coastline in this photo workshop. Instead of visiting dozens of locations\, we will focus our time in a few areas that are rich with photographic opportunities.  The workshop will be based out of Yachats and we will focus our time and creative energy on locations around Yachats\, from south of Yachats at Cape Perpetua (thors well) to Newport (lighthouse and fishing fleet).   We will visit several locations more than once so that we can become attuned to the location and create more compelling images through repeated exposure to the tides and moods of the area.  We will conduct several image reviews along with educational sessions during the workshop to help elevate our creative vision and technical skills in capturing this magnificent landscape. \n  \nWe will focus on much more than the grand landscapes in this workshop….I will work with each attendee to focus their vision to tell a more compelling story with each and every image. Using telephoto lenses to isolate and simplify\, shooting intimate nature images\, macros/close-ups…we’ll do it all in this central Oregon Coast workshop.   By the end of our time together\, my goal is that each person has learned a great deal about creativity\, photography and has had a fantastic experience in this amazingly beautiful setting. \n  \nWe will be at the right place\, at the right time to capture some amazing images\, found only on the Oregon coast while honing out photographic skills. Specific locations have been determined by years of experience. We’ll visit some of the well-known\, iconic places\, as well as many places off the beaten path. In addition\, to really experience the Intimate Oregon Coast\, we will revisit certain locations a few times in order to dive deep in to the creative possibilities that are only unlocked with some familiarity. The Oregon Coast workshops are perhaps my most anticipated. The Oregon Coast contains some of the most varied\, unique areas. Because of its remote beaches and tide pools\, rocky coastline with majestic sea stacks and dramatic sunsets\, this area offers great and different photographic experiences at every turn. \n  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. SUMMARY:Tetons in Winter
DESCRIPTION:Photograph the Pacific Northwest Workshop – Winter in the Tetons \nNothing says Wyoming like the Grand Teton National Park\, located just outside Jackson Hole. At this time of year\, the Christmas decorations are up but the crowds haven’t arrived yet and it’s a perfect time for a photo workshop – Winter in the Tetons! \nExperience the Tetons on this amazing winter photo workshop! We will spend 3 ½ days exploring Teton National Park in winter. The snow-capped mountains of the Grand Teton range will be visible from the famous Snake River locations we’ll photograph from.  Plus\, much like Yellowstone\, wildlife is common – we often see moose\, elk\, trumpeter swans\, buffalo and coyotes. Plus\, we will spend a little time doing image reviews/learning as time and weather permits.   \nPlease note that although the workshop starts at sunrise on December 2\, we will meet in Jackson Hole\, WY on the evening of November 30th for an hour or so to go over itineraries\, travel\, and workshop goals.  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. SUMMARY:Ultimate Alaskan Bears
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime photo workshop in the beautiful Katmai region of Alaska photographing the ultimate alaskan bears. You won’t want to miss this incredible experience photographing grizzly bears in their natural habitat along with other Northern wildlife\, all in the beauty of the Fall colors. \nWe will be assisted by the best guides in the region and go to areas few others ever travel to. This wilderness area is sparsely populated. The bears rule the land here and humans have adapted to respect the bears for what they are. As a result\, the bears have little fear of humans since they are the kings in this wilderness. We will be in the ultimate location for the amazing experience of photographing these marvelous animals as they dive into the ocean and rivers to catch plentiful sockeye salmon. In addition to the mighty grizzly bears\, we have the chance to see wolves hunting and foraging as well as possible side trips to see walrus colonies. This really is the trip to photograph the Ultimate Alaskan Bears. \nWe will photograph the bears along the Katmai Coast where they are fishing for salmon\, digging for clams\, eating sedge grasses or grazing blueberries on the alpine tundra.  We may also have the chance to photograph the bears at the famous Brooks Falls\, where the bears wait on top of the falls for the salmon to launch themselves over the falls. \nEach evening we’ll download our images and provide comprehensive discussions regarding composition\, seeing images and the formulation of artful photography. This means that you will need to walk up to 4 miles a day over uneven\, but flat\, terrain.  This is longest distance we may walk\, many locations are a short distance from where we can land the airplane. \nTravel to Iliamna and any lodging before or after the workshop are the responsibility of the attendee.  All lodging\, meals and transportation during the workshop are included in the workshop cost. \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Palouse Spring Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Palouse Spring Workshop – Part of our Photograph the Pacific Northwest Workshop series with myself and Jack Graham. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n  \n\n  \nCOVID UPDATE: We are continually monitoring the COVID situation and adjusting the planning for 2022 workshops accordingly to keep everyone safe based upon the spread of the disease.  Please click here to read our workshop statement relating to COVID \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Olympic Natl Park Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Olympic Natl Park photo workshop! \nOlympic National Park is on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. The diversity of the ecosystems in such proximity makes this one of the most desirable areas on earth to photograph.  \n Join me and Jack Graham as we lead you through one of the most beautiful areas in the US.  Jack and I have many years of experience photographing this park and know the ins and outs of each location to ensure that you have a wonderful experience and the best chance of capturing amazing images.   \nRain and storms on the northern Washington coastline are common this time of year. Yes\, we shoot in the rain\, but if you want drama\, this is for you! This is a great time to be here since the rainy season makes for great sunsets and light. Typically\, the best photography here is made in the soft light of a rainy day as we move about the park. The advantage of making images in the rain is that when most objects are wet they glisten and the water bends the reflected light coming off an object’s surface. The water reflects the light in various directions which intensifies and enhances the already special effect of the deep green lush rainforests that we’ll be experiencing.  \nWe’ll meet in Forks\, Washington on the evening of April 27th at 6pm in the hotel lobby to get to know each other\, go over itineraries and discuss our objectives for the workshop.  \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n  \n\n  \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Iceland in Winter Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join me for an incredible winter adventure in Iceland.  Along with my local partner\, we will take you on a journey unlike any other\, visiting this amazing country in one of the most beautiful\, and dramatic times of year\, winter!  Why winter?  It’s the best time to view the aurora\, the waterfalls are encrusted with ice\, the landscape is beautiful and the skies are filled with drama\, not to mention there are far fewer people visiting the country.  This is the best time of year to visit this beautiful country.   The sun stays at a low angle all day providing incredible soft light for photography all day long!  \n  \nDuring this workshop we will explore and photograph the south coast all the way to the south east area of Iceland. On our journey you will experience rough yet beautiful coastlines\, Europe´s largest glacier\, world famous glacier lagoons with floating majestic icebergs\, epic and iconic waterfalls in all shapes and sizes\, astonishing mountains and mountain peaks\, pitch black volcanic beaches with dramatic sea stacks\, the famed Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon and last but not least the breathtaking colorful glacier ice caves!   During the workshop you will be transported via 4×4 passenger van and all logistics and arrangements will be taken care of for you.  All you have to do is show up and be ready to photograph.  \n  \nThe workshop will be co-led with myself and one of the best photographers and guides in Iceland.  He has years of experience photographing the landscape and leading groups to popular and hidden locations on the island.  With a small workshop size (5-6 people) and two instructors providing guidance and instruction\, you will have virtually unlimited time with a seasoned professional to help you achieve your creative vision through your photographs. \n  \n \nThe workshop will begin and end in the capital city of Reykjavik.  In between we will stay in various locations along the South Coast\, including Vik and location further east in order to take advantage of proximity to the most photogenic areas of this amazing landscape.  If you want to arrive early or stay late to explore the area around Reykjavik\, that is highly recommended.  Our workshop will have an informal meet and greet in our hotel on the Sunday night before the official start and then we will plan on an early departure from Reykjavik the next day and begin our adventure. \n  \nLodging during the workshop (M-F)\, ground transportation and most meals are included in the workshop price.  Lodging\, meals and incidentals before or after the workshop is the responsibility of the attendees. Airfare is not included.  More information about the workshop along with gear recommendations will be sent you after registration.  If you have any questions about the workshop\, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. \n  \nView the video from my 2020 Iceland Winter workshop below or click HERE to visit my YouTube page \n\n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \n
