SUMMARY:Ghosts of the High Desert
DESCRIPTION:Ghosts of the High Desert – A photography workshop through Oregons ghost towns. \n\nSome places don’t fade quietly — they weather into something more haunting and more beautiful. This workshop takes you deep into the high desert of Central and Eastern Oregon\, where sun-bleached homesteads\, abandoned mining outposts\, and empty main streets sit frozen in time against a landscape of sagebrush\, basalt cliffs\, and impossibly wide skies. We’ll wind through the region’s most evocative forgotten towns — weathered wood structures leaning into the wind\, rusted machinery reclaimed by grass\, false-front buildings that once held saloons and general stores now holding only silence and light. This is a landscape built for photographers who love texture\, decay\, and the stories written in peeling paint and broken glass. \n\nOver the course of the workshop\, you’ll develop an eye for: \n\nComposing decay and texture – turning rust\, wood grain\, and crumbling structures in to compelling photographs\nWorking with wide-open light\, including the midday sun and the long dramatic shadows of golden hour\nEnvironmental storytelling\, framing subjects within the vast high-desert context that surrounds them\n\n  \n\nExpect long\, open drives between stops\, small-group energy\, and plenty of time to wander and shoot at your own pace with guidance always close at hand. Along the way\, you’ll hear the histories behind these towns — boomtowns that busted\, railroad stops bypassed\, communities the desert slowly reclaimed — context that will change the way you compose every shot. \n\n\nThis isn’t a workshop about pretty landscapes. It’s about finding beauty in abandonment\, and learning to photograph the past as it quietly disappears. \n\n\nLimited spots available — come document what’s left before the desert takes the rest. \n  \n\n\n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \n\nNo strenuous hikes. We will be close to our vehicles and all locations should feature short\, gentle walks with some uneven terrain. Please reach out if you have any questions about gear or preparedness. \n  \n\nLogistics \n\nYou can fly in directly to Portland Oregon with many airlines. There is ample rental car choices at this airport as well.  We will begin our workshop in The Dalles which is 84 miles East of Portland.  We will meet at our hotel in The Dalles on Wednesday April 28th at 4pm for a Meet and Greet.  More information will be sent to you after registration. \n\n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Expert guiding\n• Travel to/from workshop location and during workshop\n\n\n• In-field photographic instruction\n• Lodging\n\n\n• Classroom instruction\n• Meals\n\n\n• Post workshop syllabus and support\n\n\n\n• New friends and a great time!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Majestic Redwoods National Park Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Walk amongst the giant redwoods and old growth forests on the majestic Redwoods National Park photo workshop. Step in to a world where sunlight fractures into a thousand golden shafts and fog drifts like a living thing through trees older than empire. In May 2027\, join me for an immersive photography workshop deep in Redwood National Park\, where the ancient coast redwoods – some over 300 feet tall and 2\,000 years old – create a landscape unlike anywhere else on earth.   It is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience to be amongst these trees\, some of which are hundreds or thousands of years old. \nMay is the sweet spot here: spring fog rolls in most mornings\, diffusing light into that soft\, painterly glow every redwood photographer chases\, while wildflowers like trillium\, redwood sorrel and rhododendron add unexpected color to the forest floor. \nOver several days\, we will work to master: \n\nComposing scale and grandeur – framing trees so vast they defy a single glance\nWorking with fog and filtered light for that signature ethereal redwood look\nLong exposure and macro techniques for ocean\, ferns\, and forest detail\nGolden hour and blue hour strategy at iconic groves and coastal overlooks\n\nThe Redwoods \nThe Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) are a complex of one United States national park and three California state parks located along the coast of northern California. The combined RNSP contain Redwood National Park\, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park\, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park\, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The parks’ 139\,000 acres (560 km2) preserve 45 percent of all remaining old-growth coast redwood forests. Located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties\, the four parks protect the endangeredcoast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)—the tallest\, among the oldest\, and one of the most massive tree species on Earth—which thrives in the humid temperate rainforest. The park region is highly seismically active and prone to tsunamis. The parks preserve 37 miles (60 km) of pristine coastline\, indigenous flora\, fauna\, grassland prairie\, cultural resources\, waterways\, as well as threatened animal species\, such as the Chinook salmon\, northern spotted owl\, and Steller’s sea lion. \nWe’ll shoot in legendary locations including Stout Grove\, Ladybird Johnson Grove and the Tall Trees Grove.  Plus\, we will visit several iconic locations along the shoreline near Crescent City. \nWhether you’re a seasoned shooter refining your craft or an enthusiast ready to level up\, this workshop offers a rare chance to slow down\, breathe old-growth air\, and come home with images that carry the quiet enormity of the majestic redwoods. \nSpace is limited – reserve your spot for May and let the redwoods\, and me\, teach you how to see light differently. \n  \n\n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n  \n  \nFitness Level: Easy/Moderate \nWe will be walking on slightly uneven forest paths with some elevation gain/loss.  The workshop is structured to allow for all fitness levels\, you can go as far or as short as you want with plenty to photograph either way. \nLogistics \nYou can fly in directly to Medford or Portland airports and drive the remaining distance to the workshop. We will be based in Crescent City CA\, which puts us in a prime location for many of the locations we will visit.   We will travel each day from the hotel to our locations and return at various times for rest and/or image reviews.  More information will be sent to you after registration. \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Expert guiding\n• Travel to/from workshop location and during workshop\n\n\n• In-field photographic instruction\n• Lodging in Crescent City\n\n\n• Classroom instruction\n• Meals\n\n\n• Post workshop syllabus and support\n\n\n\n• New friends and a great time!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Amazing Palouse
DESCRIPTION:The Amazing Palouse – Exploring areas beyond the beaten path and capturing the subtlety and nuance of this amazing area\nI will once again be offering an amazing Spring time workshop in the beautiful Palouse region of Eastern Washington.  I have over 15 years experience leading groups across this landscape and know the hidden gems of this amazing landscape.  For 2027\, I will be focusing our vision on the hidden gems of the area\, from landscapes\, small towns and Americana and abstracts. \nWe will spend time moving beyond the obvious and draw out the subtle nuances of the rolling landscape and the storytelling possible in the various small towns in the area.  The rolling hills of wheat\, barley\, lentils and canola with the addition of spring wildflowers and country roads punctuated with over 100-year-old year old barns lends itself to a photographer’s paradise. The subject matter is endless. The Palouse area is located in Southeastern Washington where the major towns are Pullman\, Washington and Moscow\, Idaho. We will base our Palouse photo workshop out of the small town of Colfax\, which is central to everything we want to photograph. The Palouse is fairly remote. It’s not a tourist destination but during the spring and summer there are usually many photographers. \nThe Palouse can challenge all photographers to create compelling compositions amidst the rolling hills and country settings.  Various shades of greens offset the blue skies with trees dotting the landscapes.  It offers such a wide range of photographic subjects and compositional possibilities! Everything from wide angle landscapes\, to intimate nature scenes\, abstracts and Americana.  We will guide you to the best locations in the area and provide as much in-field guidance as you want or need.  Our focus will be on the the hidden areas of the Palouse\, learning to “see” the area and working to create compelling compositions and capture them in our cameras. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Also\, please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \nEXTRA ADDED ATTRACTION (not officially part of our workshop!): We’ll be heading north of Colfax by about 45 minutes on the morning the day before the workshop begins (around 8 am)\, going up to Sprague\, Washington to photograph the old trucks in Dave’s Old Truck Rescue. You are welcome to tag along. I’ll be returning to Colfax around noon. Please let us know if you are joining us. If you are\, please arrive in Colfax the day before. There is no extra charge for this excursion. \n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \n\n  \nFitness Level: Easy \nAll locations close to the cars and we will be on maintained level ground.  Facilities will typically be very close by. \nLogistics \nYou can fly in directly to Spokane or Seattle Washington. We will be staying and based in Colfax WA\, which puts us in a prime location for many of the locations we will visit.   We will travel each day from the hotel to our locations and return at various times for rest and/or image reviews.  More information will be sent to you after registration. \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Expert guiding\n• Travel to/from workshop location and during workshop\n\n\n• In-field photographic instruction\n• Lodging\n\n\n• Classroom instruction\n• Meals\n\n\n• Post workshop syllabus and support\n\n\n\n• New friends and a great time!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Above The Palouse A Drone Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Where the Land Moves Like Water \nThere’s a reason photographers travel from every corner of the world to stand on a gravel road outside Colfax\, Washington\, and stare at dirt. The Palouse isn’t dramatic in the way mountains or coastlines are dramatic — it’s dramatic the way a held breath is dramatic. Mile after mile of wheat and lentil and canola fields roll across the hills in soft\, curving lines\, planted along the contours of the land itself. From the ground\, it’s beautiful. From 200 feet up\, it’s something else entirely: a living topographic map\, painted in a dozen shades of green and gold\, shifting with every hour of light. \nThis is a landscape built for drones. Come learn how to shoot it properly. \nInstructors \nJoin John Pedersen and Marshall Alsup for an unforgettable adventure above and through the Palouse\, often called “America’s Tuscany.” John has led more than 30 workshops in the region and knows the hidden locations most visitors miss. Marshall is an accomplished drone and landscape photographer who brings deep expertise in both flying and aerial image-making. \nWhat You’ll Learn \nThis isn’t a “point your drone at a field and hope” kind of workshop. Over three days\, you’ll work through: \n\nReading the land — how to scout compositions using topography\, crop rotation patterns\, and the region’s famous curved field lines\nChasing light — golden hour and blue hour timing specific to the Palouse’s rolling terrain\, where a ridge can put you in shadow or spotlight depending on where you stand\nTechnical flight craft — camera settings\, ND filters\, exposure bracketing\, and flight paths for capturing clean panoramas and orbit shots\nPost-processing — stitching panoramas\, blending exposures\, and editing for the tonal range this landscape demands without pushing it into looking artificial\n\nSmall group size means real one-on-one time — this isn’t a workshop where you watch someone else fly. \n \nWhere We’ll Shoot \nHaving over 15 years experience leading photo workshops in this area\, we know the best spots to be at the right times to capture the magical light and stories of the Palouse. We’ll focus on wheat fields where rolling hills\, harvest color\, and working farm equipment create strong aerial compositions. In early August\, the Palouse becomes a patchwork of gold\, yellow\, and brown—ideal for capturing the region at peak harvest. Old barns\, grain elevators and silos dot the landscape and we will fly them\, capturing stunning aerial images of these structures. \nWe will conduct 3 flight sessions per day. In between flying times\, we will have classroom learning sessions or time for land based photography. \nWho This Is For \nWhether you’re an experienced pilot looking to sharpen your composition and post-processing\, or newer to drone work and want structured guidance instead of trial and error\, this workshop is built to meet you where you are. A basic understanding of your drone’s manual controls is helpful\, but the instruction scales to your level. \n  \nWhat To Bring \n\nDrone\nSpare batteries (recommend 3\, depending on battery capacity)\nDrone accessories\nStill camera\nTripod\nLaptop for editing sessions\n\nMore detailed information will be sent out prior to the workshop. \nThe Palouse doesn’t wait for you to be ready. Come learn how to be in the right place\, at the right altitude\, when it happens. \nSpots are limited — reserve your seat today. \n  \n\n  \nadd to cart / register today\n  \nFitness Level: Easy/Moderate \nWe will be walking on slightly uneven forest paths with some elevation gain/loss.  The workshop is structured to allow for all fitness levels\, you can go as far or as short as you want with plenty to photograph either way. \nLogistics \nYou can fly in directly to Spokane WA and drive the remaining distance to the workshop. We will be based in Colfax Washington\, which puts us in a prime location for many of the locations we will visit.   We will travel each day from the hotel to our locations and return at various times for rest and/or image reviews.  More information will be sent to you after registration. \n \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\n• Expert guiding\n• Travel to/from workshop location and during workshop\n\n\n• In-field flying &photographic instruction\n• Lodging in Colfax\n\n\n• Classroom instruction\n• Meals\n\n\n• Post workshop syllabus and support\n\n\n\n• New friends and a great time!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
